Ultrasound Prep Instructions

  • Pelvic/Renal Ultrasound - Patient needs to drink at least thirty-two ounces of water at least one hour before the test and try to maintain a full bladder. This test looks at the uterus, cervix and ovaries
  • Endovaginal/Transvaginal Ultrasound - Patient needs to drink at least thirty-two ounces of water one hour prior to the exam
  • Endovaginal OB - Patient needs to drink at least thirty-two ounces of water one hour prior to exam. This exam is looking for early pregnancy
  • OB 14 Weeks - Patient needs to drink at least thirty-two ounces of water prior to exam. This exam is looking for early pregnancy
  • OB Comp - Patient needs to drink at least thirty-two ounces of water one hour prior to exam. This exam is looking for size, dates, and fetal anatomic survey
  • OB Limited - Patient needs to drink at least thirty-two ounces of water prior to the exam. Survey is specific to structure
  • OB Follow-up - Patient needs to drink at least thirty-two ounces of water prior to the exam. Follow-up after patient has had an ob comp
  • Biophysical Profile - Patient needs to drink at least thirty-two ounces of water prior to the exam. This is a fetal well being survey
  • Breast - Patient needs to provide previous mammograms. This test looks at the breast and axilla
  • Thyroid - No prep needed. This looks at the thyroid or neck mass
  • Testicular - No prep needed. This looks at the testi or scrotum
  • Extremity - Not to look for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). No prep needed. This looks for mass, hematoma or abscess
  • Breast aspiration - Patient must not take blood thinners including aspirin for five days prior to test
  • Breast biopsy - Patient must not take blood thinners including aspirin for five days prior to test. Patient does need previous mammograms and/or ultrasounds.
  • Abdomen - Nothing to eat or drink (NPO) after midnight. Try to schedule a morning appointment if possible
  • Abdomen Aortic - Patient needs to have a fat free diet the night before and nothing to eat or drink (NPO) at least eight hours before exam. Okay to drink water
  • Axilla - No prep
  • Carotid - No prep
  • Dynamic hips - This is done on 0-9 month old babies. No Prep
  • Gallbladder Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ) - Patient needs to have a fat free diet the night before and nothing to eat or drink (NPO) at least 8 hours before exam. Try to schedule a morning appointment. Patient may drink water
  • Groin - No prep needed.
  • Hernia - No barium studies prior to exam. No prep needed.
  • Liver Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ) - Patient needs to have a fat free diet the night before and nothing to eat or drink (NPO) at least eight hours before exam. No meat or milk products. No barium studies prior to the ultrasound. Try to schedule a morning appointment. Patient may drink water
  • Paracentesis - Need one hour. Patient must have lab tests for PT, PTT, INR and Platelets at least three days before procedure. Doctor must send an order if they want the fluid sent to lab for further testing
  • Pyloric Stenosis - This is done on 0-3 month old babies. Don't feed the baby formula/milk forty-five minutes prior to exam
  • Spleen Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ) - No barium studies prior to the exam. Patient may drink water
  • Thoracentesis - This test will take 1 hour. Patient must have lab tests for PT, PTT, INR and Platelets no more than three days prior to exam. Doctor must send an order if they want the fluid sent to lab for further testing
  • Thyroid Biopsy - Patient needs to bring previous films and tests. Stop blood thinners including aspirin and motrin five days prior to procedure

* If you, the patient, have an artificial valve or vascular graft do not discontinue coumadin without consulting your doctor*
